The Deep Nick Cutter Books

Dude. I bought this and his other novel, The Troop, at the same time. There is just so much hype around these two books, I was unsure about *The Troop* but felt confident I would love *The Deep*.

Basically, a Veterinarian is summoned to go talk to his brother who is incommunicado at the bottom of the Marianas Trench researching a possible cure for a disease that has become a pandemic. It's like a last ditch effort to save humanity.

Most of the characters are fleshed out well, but there's lots of bags of bones hanging about also, people I wish I got to know better. I really wish we got to learn more about the disease. The disease sounded more interesting to be honest.

I liked how Cutter wrote the novel, the flashbacks are done really well, I was getting some serious *IT* vibes. Nick Cutter is a very good writer. He does creepy very well and is masterful when it comes to setting and description. The pace of the book goes at a good clip, he doesn't dawdle.

This book has so much promise, and I did enjoy reading much of it. In the end I dislikes the reveal and the ending, it kind of made me hate the book. I don't really hate it, but I won't bother with it again and most likely I won't be reading anymore of his books.

The Deep Nick Cutter Books Reviews

I wanted to really like this book and should have, but…..

This book contains all the elements that appeal to me, specifically, a watery locale at the bottom of an ocean trench, a group of scientists, with whom all communication has been lost, searching for a cure to a disease that has stumped the best minds and a substance that is a possible cure of unknown (perhaps alien) origin. It started out great and my attention was riveted. The characters are well conceived and relatable.

Unfortunately, about a third of the way through, I started losing interest. There are areas where the horror builds and, at times, is unrelenting but the writing is tedious (flashbacks, journal entries, etc.) and doesn’t advance or embellish the suspense or horror and lacks a jolting punch. I felt more outside the action/suspense than being immersed and experiencing it from within. Don’t get me wrong because it isn’t terrible (1-2 stars) but I believe could have been much, much better.
In this interesting sci-fi suspense novel by Nick Cutter, the world is at the precipice of destruction in the form of a modern-day, Alzheimer-esque plague, The Gets. A promising cure may be found in the depth of the Marianas Trench, where a team of researchers are submerged in a spider-like laboratory. However, something has gone awry, and the brother of one of the scientists is sent down to investigate.

There are some pacing issues - at times brilliant, and other times in need of a good editor. It has elements of The Tommyknockers, It, and other Stephen King novels. This is the first Cutter novel I've read, but I would be willing to check out others.

It is worthy of 4.5 stars, but I'm unable to give it the extra half.
After reading, "The Troop", one of the most disturbing novels I have ever had the pleasure of enduring, I eagerly anticipated Cutter's next masterpiece. While I can't say that I am completely satisfied, neither can I say that am I disappointed. I am more perplexed than anything, as the novel is nothing like what I expected. The novel begins with people suffering from "The 'Gets", a disease that makes one forget everything, even basic motor functions. People die horribly from starvation and dehydration, and I though, "Okay, I am liking this so far...". Then it turns into "The Abyss" where people are at the bottom of the ocean looking for a cure for said disease. The protagonists see horrible things, and experience even worse happenings, but the 'Gets is rarely mentioned, and when it is, it is a passing reference. It's like the novel did a complete 180 and took a different route around the premise. Like I said, I wasn't disappointed, nor was I pleased. I was left scratching my head, wondering, "What did I just read, and what did any of it have to do with anything else?". Just a weird overall experience, not unlike eating a meal when you are hungry and getting that one spice or ingredient that throws the dish off. It's not unpalatable, but you are left wondering, "What was that I just put in my mouth?" Yeah, It's sort of like that.
