Excellent reading - when does Volume Two come out?
This story is rated five stars for content and development. It took me as a reader on a worldwind adventure into fantasy truly hoping that there is a dual world of Others co existing with humans. This story created excitement and promise in a human world on the brink of war and bloodshed.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it was set in San Francisco, has a strong woman protagonist and, a bunch of vampires, witches, and demons who live among us. Being a San Franciscan, I appreciated all the references to the city such that I could picture the scenes as I read them. It seems like the next book will dive deeper into the interesting relationship between Olivia, William, and his brother. Looking forward to reading it!
I really hated having to finish this book...that meant the end of a great new read. Looking for the second installment to continue my addiction, I found that I have to wait until November. Strong characters, modern situations and a compelling storyline combine to create a book you really don't want to put down. I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this one deserves it!
Wow! And then Wow, again. Just when I thought the vampire genre was suffering from tired blood, along comes Woman King, a gripping, self-published first novel by Evette Davis.
The story revolves around Olivia Sheppard, a resourceful, successful but somewhat conflicted San Francisco based political consultant who harbors the power to read other people's emotions, a power she is reluctant to acknowledge, let alone use. That is until her clients begin to desert her for a jealous competitor who, it turns out, has cut a deal with the Devil to drive Olivia out of business.
Forced to use her psychic abilities in order to survive, Olivia embarks on a journey of empowerment in the psychic arts. Along the way she is recruited by a supernatural council to run a major political campaign with serious implications for humans, and of course falls in love with a powerful vampire who finds his lust returning after a long drought.
The challenge of any vampire novel is to take the reader across the bridge from skepticism to buy-in of the plot line and Davis does this with skill. A veteran political consultant she draws on her experience to create a fast paced campaign subplot which propels the action.
And in Olivia she introduces a new female character to vampire fiction. No helpless but willing victim she. Olivia recognizes the inherent danger of a human entering into a relationship with a blood drinker and she is willing to take the risk - but on her own terms. The tension is palpable as she flirts with but stubbornly pulls back from allowing her lover William to drink from her to the point of no return. In a neat plot twist, as her paranormal skills and power mature, those close to her recognize that she is fated to become a leader of the secretive council.
The book has it all - shape shifters, time walkers, fairies, vampires, Serbian vampire gangsters and, of course, great vampire sex. The scene with William slightly grazing Olivia's thigh while making love at the underground pool at Hearst Castle is an instant classic. The only thing better than reading about Olivia would be sleeping with her. Oh, well.
I couldn't give the book a five because the set up could be faster, some of the key characters and relationships are not fully drawn, and Olivia's discipline about her feelings for William is not always entirely believable. But once it gets moving this is a rollicking good read. I can't wait to bite into the second book in the trilogy.
One of few American writers, in the genre of recreational fiction that I read, who is concerned with how an intolerant brand of modern Christianity has come to dominate American politics within a short period of time.
Also, though I'm not really a fan of vampire romances this one caught and held my interest. Its unusual blend of a modern political campaign combined with the affairs of Others (fairies, witches, vampires) lifts it above the norm of the current plethora of romantic vampire slush.
I'll be reading the rest of the trilogy, and also looking to see if this author writes non-paranormal stories; I think they would be even better than this.
This was a great book! I really enjoyed it. The main character showed growth, without whining. So many books right now have an MC that whines through the first half of the story about how they don't WANT to do something, it was refreshing to read something different. The story did not end in a cliffhanger, but left a few strands of the plot unanswered, which made me feel satisfied and yet wanting the next book. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I'll definitely be reading more! The male love interest was exciting and did not detract from the MC's independence, which was awesome. If you're looking for a book with an independent, strong, female protagonist, this one is for you.
